You know, of course, that antioxidants are good for your health. But do you really need to be rubbing them on your skin? Yes, say dermatologiests, who point to a growing body of research showing that topical antioxidants guard against the cell damage that causes lines and uneven pigmentation. The most potent ones available right now are idebenone (a synthetic antioxidant introduced with the launch of Prevage MD) and CoffeeBerry (an extract from the fruit of the coffee plant that's in the new line RevaleSkin), says David McDaniel, assistant professor of clinical dermatology at Eastern Virginia Medical School.

Besides boosting the body's energy levels when ingested, caffeine may rejuvenate the skin when applied topically. Researchers repeatedly exposed mice to UVB light and applied either a caffeine or placebo cream. The caffeine doubled the rate at which UV-damaged skin cells were cleared from the body - and after 11 weeks, the treated mice had fewer wrinkles than the others. Research has also shown that topical caffeine helps preven skin cancer in UV-exposed mice, says Paul Ngheim, associate professor of dermatology at the University of Washington, but human studies are needed. Skin-care product with green tea extract may contain caffeine. A coffee-plant extracted called CoffeeBerry (in RevaleSkin Cream) contains only trace amounts of caffeine but also has been shown to diminish wrinkles.

Marie Clair - Wake Up and Wear The Coffee
Having an early morning coffee has taken on a new meaning in LA, where the search for the anti-aging elixir has unearthed a new weapon - the seeds of the coffee plant, the coffeeberry. This superfruit grows at high altitudes, where the sun's rays are strongest and develops antioxidants called polyphenols to protect itself from sun damage. Roasting destorys these nutrients, so they are not found in traditional coffee, but coffee berries have high levels of polyphenols that help prevent skin damage when applied externally or which boost the immune system when ingested. The levels of these polyphenols are three times higher than those found in green tea. The tests, 64 percent of women found an improvement in skin smoothness. REVALESKIN, a new face cream containg extract of CoffeeBerry, is available in the US.
