EltaMD UV Clear in the US: SPF 46 tints and the newer SPF 50
UV Clear now covers two different SPF formulas in the US. The familiar SPF 46 comes untinted, tinted or deep tinted; all three use 9% zinc oxide and 7.5% octinoxate. The newer untinted UV Clear Blemish-Prone & Oil Balancing SPF 50 uses 11% zinc oxide and 3.5% octinoxate, and has a different base. Match the exact front-label name before comparing ingredients or buying a refill.
Which UV Clear fits?
Choose SPF 46 untinted if you want the familiar uncolored formula, SPF 46 tinted for a sheer shade aimed at light through medium-deep tones, or SPF 46 deep tinted for a deeper shade. Choose Blemish-Prone & Oil Balancing SPF 50 for EltaMD's newer untinted oil-focused formula. All four list 5% niacinamide; none is a niacinamide-free or all-mineral sunscreen.

Why consider it
The untinted SPF 46 option with the original 9% zinc oxide/7.5% octinoxate active combination and 5% niacinamide.
Adds a sheer tint; EltaMD says the shade works best for light, medium-light, medium and medium-deep tones.
Trade-off to consider
No tint or water-resistance rating. The newer SPF 50 has a different formula.
Compared with untinted SPF 46, its published inactive list also adds isopropyl palmitate and ethylhexyl stearate.
The SPF 46 and SPF 50 labels describe different formulas
All three SPF 46 finishes share the same sunscreen active percentages: 9% zinc oxide and 7.5% octinoxate. The newer Blemish-Prone & Oil Balancing SPF 50 has 11% zinc oxide and 3.5% octinoxate. Zinc oxide is a mineral active; octinoxate is an organic UV filter, so none of these four is a mineral-only sunscreen.
The SPF 50 is untinted and positioned for blemish-prone, oily skin. EltaMD reports a 12-week study of 43 subjects supporting its claims about visible blemishes, oil and pore size. Choose it for that formula and finish preference, rather than expecting the SPF number alone to describe how it wears.
Check 'Blemish-Prone & Oil Balancing' on the SPF 50 front label.
Do not confuse UV Clear SPF 50 with UV Daily Hydration+ SPF 50, which is a separate range.
Tint choice changes more than color on the published lists
Both tinted SPF 46 options list iron oxides, isopropyl palmitate and ethylhexyl stearate that are absent from the untinted SPF 46 list. EltaMD positions the regular tint for light through medium-deep tones and deep tint for deeper tones. Compare shades if color match is your main reason to switch.
All four list 5% niacinamide, so use the separate niacinamide-free sunscreen guide if that is your filter.
None of the four lists octocrylene among its sunscreen actives; the separate octocrylene-free guide compares different US options.
Use and reapplication
EltaMD directs SPF 46 users to apply liberally 15 minutes before exposure, reapply at least every two hours and use a water-resistant sunscreen for swimming or sweating. Its SPF 50 page likewise says to apply liberally and reapply every two hours; the registered US label adds the water-resistant-sunscreen instruction for swimming or sweating.
If the airless pump does not dispense, EltaMD's product page gives priming steps. For daily wear, choose the tint and formula you will apply generously and reapply as directed.
Use a water-resistant sunscreen for swimming or sweating.
