M.D. Formulations Skin Care FAQ
Sensitive Dry Aging Oily Problem
Sensitive Skin: How do I take care of my sensitive skin?
What Causes skin to become sensitive?
Anyone can develop skin sensitivity at some time or another. There are many factors that can contribute to skin sensitivity, but it all comes down to a weakened protective barrier that allows common irritants and other elements to penetrate skin's surface, causing skin to react and develop sensitivity. Many common substances that we come in contact with everyday can cause sensitive skin to become red and blotchy, itch, sting and feel uncomfortable. Often, fragrances, colorants and preservatives used in skin care and cosmetics products can irritate sensitive skin. Extreme cold, heat, water temperatures, smog, smoke and even long air travel can also trigger a reaction. Genetics, some medications, nutritional supplements, and even stress may contribute to skin sensitivity as well.
Sensitive skin needs special, gentle care. Products that are specifically developed and tested for sensitive skin can help control sensitivity. It's extremely important to protect your skin from daily environmental assault, especially by using sun protection everyday as well as utilizing products containing antioxidants to help defend and repair weak, sensitive skin.
The Skin Test
• Does your skin become flush or red and itch on occasion?
• Do fragrances, colorants and other skin care ingredients irritate the skin?
• Do most skin care products cause your skin to sting or become red?
• Does your skin feel uncomfortable in colder and drier weather?
• Does your skin appear thin and delicate?
Expert Guidance for Sensitive Skin
• Keep your skin care regimen simple. • Avoid scrubbing or cleansing skin with hot water or harsh detergent cleansers such as soap.
• Use skin care specially designed for sensitive skin. Products containing glycolic compound with a pH of 4.4 are clinically proven to have the optimum level for effective results without irritation.
• Use a moisturizer containing antioxidants to help protect and rebuild a weakened barrier and to strengthen the skin against future sensitivity.
• Avoid sun exposure and use a physical sunscreen containing zinc oxide with a minimum SPF 15 everyday.
• Use skin care and makeup that is allergy tested and free of fragrance, colorants and irritants.

Dry Skin: Why is my skin dry, tight and uncomfortable?
What causes dry skin?
Dry skin is caused by the protective moisture barrier's inability to produce enough natural skin lipids or oils. These lipids work to retain moisture naturally found in skin. A weakened barrier is often hereditary but can also be caused by aging, when mature oil glands begin to produce less oil. Dehydration (when skin lacks sufficient moisture) also contributes to dry skin and can be caused by environmental exposure, low humidity, temperature changes, poor diet and harsh cleansers that strip the skin.
Some telltale signs of dry skin include flaking, cracking, scaling, tightness and skin that can feel irritated and uncomfortable. Also, dry skin tends to reveal fine lines and wrinkles more rapidly than other skin types, so it is especially important to avoid damaging sun exposure and protct skin with sunscreen daily.
The Skin Test
• Does your skin usually feel tight and uncomfortable, especially after cleansing?
• Do you notice more fine lines around your eyes, forehead, mouth and neck?
• Does your skin become rough, crack and flake especially in low humidity or cold climates?
• Does your makeup disappear quickly throughout the day?
• Do you feel like you constantly need to reapply moisturizer?
Exert Guidance for Dry Skin
• Avoid harsh, over-drying cleansers, excessive scrubbing or hot water to cleanse skin, which can strip natural lipids and cause irritation.
• Daily exfoliation with a gentle exfoliant like glycolic acid helps to remove surface skin cells, balances natural oil production and prepares skin to receive vital hydrating ingredients.
• Moisturize immediately after facial cleansing and bathing to lock moisture in.
• Use moisturizers that mimic the skin's natural lipids and moisturizing properties, which will protect outer layers, but also repair dry skin deep within-not simply relieve surface dryness.
• Use a hydrating masque that contains strengthening antioxidants more often during harsh, windy cold months to replenish lost moisture.
• Avoid sun exposure and apply a physical sunscreen containing zinc oxide with a minimum SPF 15 everyday.
• Drink plenty of water and avoid excessive amounts of alcohol and caffeine to prevent dehydrations.

Aging Skin: What can I do about fine lines, wrinkles and age spots?
The truth about "aging" skin.
As we grow, our skin experiences several significant changes. The skin's natural support system begins to break down, causing fine lines, wrinkles and loss of elasticity. Additionally, the skin's surface begins to show dark and light spots, roughness and redness. Even though our skin does "naturally" age, research has shown that 90% of premature aging is due to harmful environmental elements, particularly UV radiation or sun exposure, but also stress, pollution, smoking, pesticides and other modern day hazards.
It is possible to have prematurely aged skin even if the telltale wrinkles and lines are not visible. By the time most people are 18, the skin has absorbed more than enough UVA and UVB rays, the most damaging of environmental aggressors. In fact, daily outdoor activities, from sports to even a simple stroll on a cloudy day can amount to years of UV exposure. Our skin never forgets this exposure, which can cause skin to look older than our actual years.
The Skin Test
• Do you see fine lines and wrinkle around the eyes, forehead and neck?
• Does your skin not "bounce back" when lifted with your fingertips?
• Do you notice skin discolorations such as dark and light spots?
• Does your skin appear to be thinner with visible capillaries?
• Does your skin feel rough and look sallow, lackluster and dull?
Expert Guidance for Aging Skin
• Gently cleanse and exfoliate daily with a gentle exfoliant such as glycolic acid to remove thickened, aged skin cells. Exfoliating also normalizes skin...minimizing lines, roughness and spots. • Keep your skin well hydrated by using a moisturizer that balances skin lipids and natural moisture levels.
• Use anti-aging ingredients such as Vitamin A, glycolic acid and BHAs to help reduce fine lines and wrinkles, improving skin texture.
• Incorporate antioxidants, such as superoxide dismutase, vitamin E and C, and plant extracts into your skin care to reduce signs of aging by protecting skin and rebuilding damaged layers.
• Use skin-brightening products to help diminish age spots and improve skin tone. Formulas with botanical extracts combined with natural AHAs and BHAs produce effective, safe results.
• Avoid sun exposure and use a physical sunscreen containing zinc oxide everyday with a minimum SPF 15.

Oily Skin: How can I control my oily skin?
What causes oiliness and enlarged pores?
There are several factors that contribute to oily skin and enlarged pores. Genetics and hot, humid climates may determine oil production and pore size, while some medications and cosmetic ingredients can irritate oily skin. Also, stress can trigger hormones, leading to the over production of sebum, or skin oil. When excess oil mixes with dead skin cells, it can lead to skin blemishes. However, if your skin has consistent breakouts, consult your skin care professional-you may have problem prone skin.
Oily skin is also often aggravated by a misuse of skin care products. In particular is the common misconception to over cleanse and under hydrate oily skin. This imbalance can actually cause oily skin to look and feel worse.
The Skin Test
• Does your skin become shiny and greasy a few hours after cleansing?
• Is your complexion like the surface of an organge peel?
• Do these enlarged pores often become clogged?
• Do you experience occasional skin blemishes and breakouts?
• Does your makeup fade and skin becomes shiny throughout the day?
Expert Guidance for Oily Skin
• Cleanse skin morning and night to remove surface oils.
• Exfoliate skin regularly with a natural exfoliant such as glycolic acid to remove dead cells, balance oil production and reduce the appearance of enlarged pores.
• Use an oil-free moisturizer that hydrates the inner layers of the skin without leaving a shiny residue.
• Use products with refining ingredients such as salicylic acid and vitamin A.
• Treat oily skin with a gentle skin cleansing masque once a week. Natural clay, vitamin A and gentle AHAs and BHAs can work to remove pore-clogging oil and skin cells, normalize oily skin and retexturize enlarged pores.
• Protect your skin daily from harmful sun exposure with a physical sunscreen containing zinc oxide with SPF 15 or greater.
• Use oil-free, non-comedogenic skin care, make up and hair care to prevent clogged pores.

Problem Prone Skin: How can I control my problem prone skin?
What can I do about blemishes, acne and other problem prone skin conditions?
There is no single cause for acne and problem prone skin. Genetics and changes in hormonal activity, first stimulated during adolescence, play a main role in problem prone skin. Also, while diet is important for skin health, certain foods do not directly cause acne and blemishes. But other factors such as stress, hormonal fluctuations, hot and humid climates, some medications and certain cosmetic ingredients can irritate the skin and clog pores, which can aggravate acne and blemishes. Because of all these factors, acne can even develop in adult skin.
Technically, this condition is caused by a combination of excess dead skin cells, bacteria and excess sebum or skin oil. When bacteria combine with oil and dead skin cells in the hair follicles, it can lead to inflammation. This inflammation, known as acne, may be in the form of numerous but less obvious whiteheads and blackheads or larger, visible eruptions such as papules and pustules.
The Skin Test
• Do you consistently experience areas of blemishes and large eruptions?
• Is your skin texture bumpy and uneven with whiteheads and blackheads?
• Do you have enlarged pores that often become clogged?
Expert Guidance for Oily Skin
• Avoid rubbing or scrubbing skin excessively or picking blemishes which can irritate skin and lead to scarring.
• Cleanse skin morning and night to remove excess oil and dead cells.
• Use gentle exfoliants such as glycolic acid and/or lactic acid to smooth and normalize skin.
• Control breakouts and blemishes with skin care that contains salicylic acid and vitamin A, or benzoyl peroxide for antibacterial benefits.
• Use an oil-free moisturizer that will hydrate the inner layers of the skin without contributing to clogged pores.
• Use a skin cleansing masque, such as one with natural clay, vitamin A and gentle AHAs and BHAs to clear pore-clogging oil and dead cells and retexturize problem prone skin.
• Protect your skin daily with a physical sunscreen containing zinc oxide with SPF 15 or greater.
• Use non-comedogenic skin care, make up and hair care to prevent clogged pores and irritation.
