Obagi Hydrate or Hydrate Luxe: choose the daily cream or richer night cream

Obagi Hydrate Facial Moisturizer and Hydrate Luxe Ultra Moisture-rich Cream share a Tara seed moisture system and several emollients, but they serve different routine preferences. Hydrate is the brand's lighter day-or-night choice. Luxe is the richer cream Obagi directs for evening use; its full ingredient list adds fragrance and two named peptides.

The useful distinction

Choose Hydrate if you want one moisturizer for morning and evening or prefer a formula without listed fragrance. Choose Hydrate Luxe if you want a richer evening cream and are comfortable with its added fragrance allergens. Both are 1.7 oz/48 g products at the checked US retailer; Luxe costs $15 more at the listed one-time prices.

Choose by routine and texture

Obagi describes Hydrate as lightweight and instructs use morning and evening or as needed. It describes Hydrate Luxe as ultra-rich and instructs evening use. Start with your preferred richness and whether you want one cream for both times of day.

Both have glycerin, shea and mango butters, avocado oil and Tara seed derivatives. Neither current US product page lists a sunscreen active, so morning use still needs a separate SPF step.

The ingredient differences that change the choice

Hydrate's current full list does not name fragrance or the two Luxe peptides. Luxe lists fragrance (parfum), limonene, benzyl benzoate, linalool, hydroxycitronellal, geraniol, hexyl cinnamal and benzyl alcohol. Readers who avoid added fragrance have a clear reason to prefer Hydrate.

Luxe names caprooyl tetrapeptide-3 and tripeptide-1 near the end of its list. Obagi describes them as biomimetic peptides and reports a 2013 blinded product-use test for the appearance of fine lines. The clearer everyday distinction is still its richer evening positioning and added fragrance.

Price, packaging and who should buy which

Dermstore's US listings identify each exact product as 1.7 oz and show one-time prices of $70 for Hydrate and $85 for Hydrate Luxe. That works out to about $41.18/oz and $50.00/oz, respectively. Auto-replenish prices differ.

Obagi lists both for normal-to-oily, normal-to-dry and combination skin. Your useful choice is the preferred richness, morning-versus-evening use and fragrance preference. Retailers may show old or new packaging, so match the exact product name.
