Tinted mineral face sunscreens: shade choices, finish and US prices

For a mineral sunscreen that blends with your skin tone, start with the tint and coverage. Colorescience Flex has six shades and medium coverage; EltaMD UV AOX Elements offers one sheer tint; Supergoop Mattescreen Sunrise is a matte, primer-style option. All three use mineral sunscreen actives, but their color, texture and water-resistance directions differ.

Start with shade, then finish

Choose Flex when shade range and more coverage matter most. Choose UV AOX Elements for a moisturizing sheer tint without listed niacinamide. Choose Mattescreen Sunrise for a matte primer-style finish. Flex and AOX Elements have 40-minute water resistance; Mattescreen Sunrise directs you to use a water-resistant sunscreen for swimming or sweating.

How to choose a tint when white cast is the problem

Shade depth and undertone matter more than the word tinted. Start by comparing the brand swatches with your face and neck: a tint that is too light can look pale, while a tint that is too warm can look orange. Flex gives you six named shades to compare; AOX Elements has one sheer tint; the Mattescreen entry here is specifically Sunrise.

For Flex, blend until the initially white base changes color and give it one to two minutes to settle before judging the match. For any tinted SPF, assess the color at the amount directed for sun protection, rather than rubbing a tiny swatch into your hand.

The useful ingredient differences

Flex lists niacinamide; AOX Elements and the exact Mattescreen Sunrise ingredient list do not. Flex uses zinc oxide as its sunscreen active. AOX Elements and Mattescreen use both zinc oxide and titanium dioxide. Iron oxide pigments provide the tint; the percentages of sunscreen actives do not tell you how a shade will look.

Swimming, sweating and daily makeup

For a workout or swim, Flex and AOX Elements specify reapplication after 40 minutes in water or while sweating, and immediately after towel drying. Mattescreen Sunrise is the daily makeup-base option here, with directions to choose a water-resistant sunscreen for those activities. All three need reapplication at least every two hours.

Apply the sunscreen evenly as its own layer. Adjust the finish with makeup over it instead of thinning the sunscreen with moisturizer.
